The Neuroscience Behind Stress and Learning

The realities of standardized tests and increasingly structured, if not synchronized, curriculum continue to build classroom stress levels. Neuroimaging research reveals the disturbances in the brain's learning circuits and neurotransmitters that accompany stressful learning environments. The neuroscientific research about learning has revealed the negative impact of stress and anxiety and the qualitative improvement of the brain circuitry involved in memory and executive function that accompanies positive motivation and engagement.

The Proven Effects of Positive Motivation
Thankfully, this information has led to the development of brain-compatible strategies to help students through the bleak terrain created by some of the current trends imposed by the Common Core State Standards and similar mandates. With brain-based teaching strategies that reduce classroom anxiety and increase student connection to their lessons, educators can help students learn more effectively.
In the past two decades, neuroimaging and brain-mapping research have provided objective support to the student-centered educational model. This brain research demonstrates that superior learning takes place when classroom experiences are relevant to students' lives, interests, and experiences. Lessons can be stimulating and challenging without being intimidating, and the increasing curriculum requirements can be achieved without stress, anxiety, boredom, and alienation as the pervasive emotions of the school day.
During my 15 years of practicing adult and child neurology with neuroimaging and brain mapping as part of my diagnostic tool kit, I worked with children and adults with brain function disorders, including learning differences. When I then returned to university to obtain my credential and Masters of Education degree, these familiar neuroimaging tools had become available to education researchers. Their widespread use in schools and classrooms globally has yet to occur.
This brain research demonstrates that superior learning takes place when classroom experiences are motivating and engaging. Positive motivation impacts brain metabolism, conduction of nerve impulses through the memory areas, and the release of neurotransmitters that increase executive function and attention. Relevant lessons help students feel that they are partners in their education, and they are engaged and motivated.
We live in a stressful world and troubled times, and that is not supposed to be the way for children to grow up. Schools can be the safe haven where academic practices and classroom strategies provide children with emotional comfort and pleasure as well as knowledge. When teachers use strategies to reduce stress and build a positive emotional environment, students gain emotional resilience and learn more efficiently and at higher levels of cognition.

Neuroimaging and EEG Studies
Studies of electrical activity (EEG or brain waves) and metabolic activity (from specialized brain scans measuring glucose or oxygen use and blood flow) show the synchronization of brain activity as information passes from the sensory input processing areas of the somatosensory cortex to the reticular activating and limbic systems. For example, bursts of brain activity from the somatosensory cortex are followed milliseconds later by bursts of electrical activity in the hippocampus, amygdala, and then the other parts of the limbic system. This data from one of the most exciting areas of brain-based learning research gives us a way to see which techniques and strategies stimulate or impede communication between the parts of the brain when information is processed and stored. In other words, properly applied, we can identify and remove barriers to student understanding!
The amygdala is part of limbic system in the temporal lobe. It was first believed to function as a brain center for responding primarily to anxiety and fear. Indeed, when the amygdala senses threat, it becomes over-activated. In students, these neuroimaging findings in the amygdala are seen with feelings of helplessness and anxiety. When the amygdala is in this state of stress-induced over-activation, new sensory information cannot pass through it to access the memory and association circuits.
This is the actual neuroimaging visualization of what has been called the affective filter by Stephen Krashen and others. This term describes an emotional state of stress in students during which they are not responsive to learning and storing new information. What is now evident on brain scans during times of stress is objective physical evidence of this affective filter. With such evidence-based research, the affective filter theories cannot be disparaged as "feel-good education" or an "excuse to coddle students" -- if students are stressed out, the information cannot get in. This is a matter of science.
This affective state occurs when students feel alienated from their academic experience and anxious about their lack of understanding. Consider the example of the decodable "books" used in phonics-heavy reading instruction. These are not engaging and motivating. They are usually not relevant to the students' lives because their goal is to include words that can be decoded based on the lesson. Decodability is often at the expense of authentic meaning to the child. Reading becomes tedious and, for some children, confusing and anxiety-provoking. In this state, there is reduced passage of information through the neural pathways from the amygdala to higher cognitive centers of the brain, including the prefrontal cortex, where information is processed, associated, and stored for later retrieval and executive functioning.
Additional neuroimaging studies of the amygdala, hippocampus, and the rest of the limbic system, along with measurement of dopamine and other brain chemical transmitters during the learning process, reveal that students' comfort level has critical impact on information transmission and storage in the brain. The factors that have been found to affect this comfort level such as self-confidence, trust and positive feelings for teachers, and supportive classroom and school communities are directly related to the state of mind compatible with the most successful learning, remembering, and higher-order thinking.

The Power of Joyful Learning
The highest-level executive thinking, making connections, and "aha" moments of insight and creative innovation are more likely to occur in an atmosphere of what Alfie Kohn calls exuberant discovery, where students of all ages retain that kindergarten enthusiasm of embracing each day with the joy of learning. With current research and data in the field of neuroscience, we see growing opportunities to coordinate the design of curriculum, instruction, and assessment in ways that will reflect these incredible discoveries.
Joy and enthusiasm are absolutely essential for learning to happen -- literally, scientifically, as a matter of fact and research. Shouldn't it be our challenge and opportunity to design learning that embraces these ingredients?

curriculum continue to build classroom stress levels. Neuroimaging research reveals
the disturbances in the brain's learning circuits and neurotransmitters that accompany stressful learning environments. The neuroscientific research about learning has revealed the negative impact of stress and anxiety and the qualitative improvement of the brain circuitry involved in memory
and executive function that accompanies positive motivation and engagement.

Why Stress Inhibits Learning

Children need to feel safe in order to learn—if they become stressed in school,
their brains will spend more energy on self-protection than learning.

Ted was a talkative, engaging and curious second-grade boy. But while he was extremely smart,
Ted had difficulty learning. He had a short attention span. He hated to write.
He was also somewhat anxious, socially awkward and self-conscious.
His teacher had become increasingly concerned about and, understandably, frustrated
by his resistance to writing, his inability to “get anything done,” his obsessive habits,
his negative attitude and his frequent tendency to “shut down.”
When I tested him at my neuropsychology practice and observed him in class,
it became obvious that Ted was very easily stressed and felt highly stressed in school.

When we are stressed, the lower part of the brain takes over. Nature wants us to respond
to emergencies instinctively, not thoughtfully. That way we’ll have a better chance of,
say, outrunning a predator. So when our stress response (aka fight-or-flight) is activated,
stress hormones actually turn off the parts of the brain that allow us to focus attention,
understand ideas, commit information to memory and reason critically.
Ted’s stress response was constantly being triggered in the classroom. He was worried about disappointing his teacher and looking stupid in front of the other students. Thus, he avoided group activities, spaced-out during work time and looked for any opportunity to get away.

I test dozens of kids every year who are so stressed out that they have trouble learning
and keeping up in school. And it’s not just my practice. Research indicates that kids today
are experiencing record levels of stress-related mental health problems—and much more stress 
than their parents realize. This is a big deal, because prolonged stress can profoundly undermine learning, mental health and brain development in young people.

In Ted’s case, I ultimately concluded that he needed to be in a school program
that was highly sensitive to the needs of children with learning difficulties. His parents were luckily able to find such a program. They were delighted to send me his first report card
from the new school, which enumerated his many strengths, including his “infectious enthusiasm!”
I could hardly believe this was the same child I had seen six months earlier. The difference was
that Ted felt safe and accepted in his new school and, as a result, didn’t spend the whole day
with a stressed brain that couldn’t think, learn or work efficiently.

Extensive research shows that the optimal mental state for learning is relaxed alertness. 
This means that kids have to feel safe in order to learn. Otherwise, their brains spend more energy
on self-protection than on their work. This doesn’t mean that children shouldn’t be challenged
and stretched. If they aren’t challenged, kids feel bored, and hard situations are crucial
for the development of resilience—or the ability to deal with adversity flexibly. We therefore don’t want to try to protect children from having any stressful experiences. However, chronic stress
is counterproductive. Kids’ brains work most efficiently when they feel safe—not just physically,
but also emotionally. When students know that it’s ok to fail, they can take the kinds of risks
that lead to real growth; they can develop brains that are capable of thinking,
learning and performing at a high level and of being happy.

Some things you can do to protect your kids—of any age—from being stressed out of their minds:
Try as much as possible to be a “non-anxious presence” for your children. If we stay relatively calm and centered, it makes it much easier to comfort an infant or sooth a toddler,
respond to a child in a flexible, mature, understanding manner and enjoy our kids.
Maintain as much consistency in your child’s (and your own) daily routine as possible. This helps,
in part, because a lack of predictability and a low sense of control increase vulnerability to stress.
Avoid over scheduling children and teenagers. Young children and school-age kids need time to play and to be with their families, and teens need time to catch up on sleep
and stay connected with their parents and siblings.
Make sleep a top priority, as even a half hour of sleep can make a significant difference
in a child’s mental and emotional functioning. Help kids develop good wind-down routines at night, and talk to their pediatrician if they have trouble sleeping or seem unusually tired during the day.
Schedule in weekly periods of “private time” with each child as regularly as possible.
Spending time alone with children is a powerful way of staying connected with them,
which helps them feel safe in the world.
Support your children in developing a strong sense of internal control, which will make them
more resistant to stress. With young children, give them choices about how and when to do things. With older children and adolescents, allow them to increasingly make decisions
about things that affect their lives.
Get kids help if they seem highly anxious. Early treatment of anxiety has a strong protective effect. Talk to your child’s pediatrician, a community health clinic or a school guidance counselor.
From kindergarten on, try to protect your kids from excessive homework and academic pressure, which are completely counterproductive. Work with other parents and professionals
to encourage schools to implement “evidenced-based” homework practices,
as there is no scientific evidence to support hours and hours of homework.
Encourage kids to develop routines for de-stressing themselves. With young children,
this could include 30 minutes of quiet play in their rooms, looking at books
or watching a video that is not highly stimulating.
With older children and teens, it could be regular exercise, yoga or daily meditation.

Stress inhibits learning – it’s a fact supported by neuroscience.

But, as a teacher, you didn’t need the research to tell you that did you?
Your classroom experience backs up the science. Here’s why and what you can do about it…

STRESS AND LEARNING

Have you ever tried to focus in a meeting, sit for a test or concentrate on reading a book
when you are feeling upset, angry or stressed out? Did you notice what happened?

Naturally, you would have found it extremely difficult to focus or concentrate on the task at hand while you were feeling stressed out. It’s a fact.
Research demonstrates that stress inhibits concentration and is detrimental to learning.

In response to fear, stress or a perceived threat in the environment,
the brain releases two hormones – cortisol and adrenaline.
This activates the blood vessels and the heart for lifesaving ‘flight or fight’ action.

If a human being is in ‘danger’, there is no need for learning or thoughtfulness.
All that is needed is to get the heck out of there! To stop and think could endanger your life
and therefore, Mother Nature has designed our physiology to respond appropriately,
instinctively – all the brain’s energy is diverted into self-protection and survival mode.

This was a great evolutionary advantage when our ancestors needed to escape a lion
or fight a rival tribe! However, in our modern classrooms, these stress hormones,
are getting in the way of effective learning.
Cortisol and adrenaline actually turn off the parts of the brain that allow us to focus attention, understand ideas, commit information to memory and reason critically.
Stressed out students are not learning effectively. It’s as simple as that.

STATISTICS

Now, our students are not fighting lions nor protecting their clans but nevertheless,
they are experiencing modern day stress. The following statistics, from Youthbeyondblue[i],
paint quite a shocking picture of the inner world of our young people here in Australia
and give us an idea of the numbers of students whose learning is impaired by stress:

One in four young Australians currently has a mental health condition
Suicide is the biggest killer of young Australians
and accounts for the deaths of more young people than car accidents
One in sixteen young Australians is currently experiencing depression.
One in six young Australians is currently experiencing an anxiety
The top three issues that young people are most concerned about are coping with stress,
school or study problems.
A quarter of young Australians say they are unhappy with their lives.
In 2013, almost one in four young people (24.3%) said they were sad, very sad
or not happy when asked to report how happy they were with their life as a whole.
These are sobering statistics that is for sure!

It seems pretty clear that given the effects of stress on the brain’s ability to learn,
it is foolish to attempt to teach anything at all
until we have addressed the emotional well being and mental health of our students.

STRESS BUSTING STRATEGIES

The good news is that once recognized, stress can be dealt with and transformed.
Extensive studies show that the optimal mental state for learning is relaxed alertness. This means that our students need to feel safe, calm and balanced emotionally in order to learn effectively.
Also we use kinesiology techniques that
relax the body and mind and make it far easier to learn

Sadly, there are some students in your classroom whose learning is compromised by stress,
worry or anxiety.

Children are not born with practical coping skills. Some students will be better at coping than others. For those not coping well, it is an essential part of our job as educators to help our students deal with the stressors in their lives. Developing the mind is important, learning is important and yet it won’t happen if we ignore the emotional well being of our students. We have a moral and ethical obligation to help young people cope with stress, anxiety and to develop their emotional well being, to give them practical strategies to support their learning and their journey through life.

Here are some ideas:

Simple relaxation exercises with abdominal breathing or heart breathing techniques can work wonders for students. Breath work is relaxing and helps to balance the autonomic nervous system, bringing a student out of ‘flight or fight’ mode and back into a state of calm and balance within the nervous system. Chemicals like dopamine are also released within the body and this helps to activate the brain for optimal learning.
M’reen: While not pretending to be therapy; when Turbo Charged Reading, with three breaths
you relax into the focussed state of learning and this means that you have more relaxing alpha waves in your brain that the active, chatty beta waves.
Breathing techniques can also teach students the skill of staying in the present moment.
Sometimes anxiety is caused when the mind wanders off into future possibilities
and worrying about things that have not even happened yet.
Deep breathing can help a student to come back to the present moment
and just manage the next small step, rather than feeling lost in the overwhelm of a bigger picture.
If a student is in overwhelm, teach them how to break things down.
For example, teach them how to break a large task down into smaller, more attainable tasks. Although this might seem simple to us as adults,
it doesn’t necessarily come naturally to a young person.
If a student reaches out to you and wishes to talk, one of the best gifts you can give them
is to simply be present with them and provide a listening ear. Just being able to talk to an adult
who cares can alleviate a lot of the stress a young person might be feeling.
Studies show that students at risk who are supported by one adult outside the family
unit are less likely to harm themselves.
Teach young people about the importance of what they put into their bodies
and how it can affect their mental health. There is a considerable amount of research
being shared now about gut health and psychology – particularly in relation to ADHD, autism, aspergers and other issues affecting many of our students.
Questions about healthful, regular eating are not only relevant but important in the classroom. Filling up with junk like sugar and fast foods means that the body and mind
are not going to perform efficiently.
For anxious students, particularly those in Year 11 and 12, check on the amounts of caffeine
being consumed. Caffeine can heighten feelings of agitation and anxiety.
And it’s also important to make sure the body is sufficiently hydrated
 – are they drinking enough water? Water intake will affect brain function
and given that the body is 75% water, it’s actually a very important factor to consider.
Exercise can be a wonderful way for students to deal with stress. There is nothing better than blowing off steam by running, playing footy or a good session with a punching bag!
Teach students how to articulate feelings and speak up for themselves.
For example, “I feel angry when you yell at me” or simply, “Please stop yelling.”
Compassionate communication is important to avoid a tendency to ‘stuff things down’ inside
the body – which can result in blow-ups.
Negative self-talk can be a factor that affects young people.
Help your students to become aware of how they speak to themselves in their minds.
Are they kind to themselves? Are they patient and considerate of themselves
as they would be to a friend? Or are they hard on themselves and self-critical?
Once a person is aware of their own self-talk and how it is affecting them,
it can be transformed into more positive ways of thinking.
The field of Positive Psychology has wonderful tools for this.
Taking a break from stressful situations can also help. Engaging in activities like listening to music, talking to a friend, doing something creative like drawing or writing,
or even spending time with a pet can reduce stress.
These kinds of activities will also produce dopamine, important for well-being and learning.
Making connections with friends and building a network of supportive friends
who can help the student cope or just be there as a listening ear in times of trouble.

Stress inhibits learning – it’s a fact supported by neuroscience.
But, as a teacher, you didn’t need the research to tell you that did you?
Your classroom experience backs up the science. Here’s why and what you can do about it…

STRESS AND LEARNING

Have you ever tried to focus in a meeting, sit for a test or concentrate on reading a book
when you are feeling upset, angry or stressed out? Did you notice what happened?

Naturally, you would have found it extremely difficult to focus or concentrate on the task at hand 
while you were feeling stressed out. It’s a fact.
Research demonstrates that stress inhibits concentration and is detrimental to learning.

In response to fear, stress or a perceived threat in the environment,
the brain releases two hormones – cortisol and adrenaline.
This activates the blood vessels and the heart for lifesaving ‘flight or fight’ action.

If a human being is in ‘danger’, there is no need for learning or thoughtfulness.
All that is needed is to get the heck out of there! To stop and think could endanger your life
and therefore, Mother Nature has designed our physiology to respond appropriately,
instinctively – all the brain’s energy is diverted into self-protection and survival mode.

This was a great evolutionary advantage when our ancestors needed to escape a lion
or fight a rival tribe! However, in our modern classrooms, these stress hormones,
are getting in the way of effective learning.
Cortisol and adrenaline actually turn off the parts of the brain that allow us to focus attention, 
understand ideas, commit information to memory and reason critically.
Stressed out students are not learning effectively. It’s as simple as that.

STATISTICS

Now, our students are not fighting lions nor protecting their clans but nevertheless,
they are experiencing modern day stress. The following statistics, from Youthbeyondblue[i],
paint quite a shocking picture of the inner world of our young people here in Australia
and give us an idea of the numbers of students whose learning is impaired by stress:

One in four young Australians currently has a mental health condition
Suicide is the biggest killer of young Australians
and accounts for the deaths of more young people than car accidents
One in sixteen young Australians is currently experiencing depression.
One in six young Australians is currently experiencing an anxiety
The top three issues that young people are most concerned about are coping with stress,
school or study problems.
A quarter of young Australians say they are unhappy with their lives.
In 2013, almost one in four young people (24.3%) said they were sad, very sad
or not happy when asked to report how happy they were with their life as a whole.
These are sobering statistics that is for sure!

It seems pretty clear that given the effects of stress on the brain’s ability to learn,
it is foolish to attempt to teach anything at all
until we have addressed the emotional well being and mental health of our students.

STRESS BUSTING STRATEGIES

The good news is that once recognized, stress can be dealt with and transformed.
Extensive studies show that the optimal mental state for learning is relaxed alertness. This means that our students need to feel safe, calm and balanced emotionally in order to learn effectively.
Also we use kinesiology techniques that
relax the body and mind and make it far easier to learn

Sadly, there are some students in your classroom whose learning is compromised by stress,
worry or anxiety.

Children are not born with practical coping skills. Some students will be better at coping than others. 
For those not coping well, it is an essential part of our job as educators to help our students deal 
with the stressors in their lives. Developing the mind is important, learning is important and yet it won’t happen if we ignore the emotional well being of our students. We have a moral and ethical obligation to help young people cope with stress, anxiety and to develop their emotional well being, 
to give them practical strategies to support their learning and their journey through life.

Here are some ideas:

Simple relaxation exercises with abdominal breathing or heart breathing techniques can work wonders for students. Breath work is relaxing and helps to balance the autonomic nervous system, bringing a student out of ‘flight or fight’ mode and back into a state 
of calm and balance within the nervous system. Chemicals like dopamine are also released 
within the body and this helps to activate the brain for optimal learning.
M’reen: While not pretending to be therapy; when Turbo Charged Reading, with three breaths
you relax into the focussed state of learning and this means that you have more relaxing alpha waves in your brain that the active, chatty beta waves.

Breathing techniques can also teach students the skill of staying in the present moment.
Sometimes anxiety is caused when the mind wanders off into future possibilities
and worrying about things that have not even happened yet.
Deep breathing can help a student to come back to the present moment
and just manage the next small step, rather than feeling lost in the overwhelm of a bigger picture.

If a student is in overwhelm, teach them how to break things down.
For example, teach them how to break a large task down into smaller, more attainable tasks. Although this might seem simple to us as adults,
it doesn’t necessarily come naturally to a young person.

If a student reaches out to you and wishes to talk, one of the best gifts you can give them
is to simply be present with them and provide a listening ear. Just being able to talk to an adult
who cares can alleviate a lot of the stress a young person might be feeling.
Studies show that students at risk who are supported by one adult outside the family
unit are less likely to harm themselves.

Teach young people about the importance of what they put into their bodies
and how it can affect their mental health. There is a considerable amount of research
being shared now about gut health and psychology – particularly in relation to ADHD, autism, aspergers and other issues affecting many of our students.
Questions about healthful, regular eating are not only relevant but important in the classroom. 
Filling up with junk like sugar and fast foods means that the body and mind
are not going to perform efficiently.

For anxious students, particularly those in Year 11 and 12, check on the amounts of caffeine
being consumed. Caffeine can heighten feelings of agitation and anxiety.
And it’s also important to make sure the body is sufficiently hydrated
 – are they drinking enough water? Water intake will affect brain function
and given that the body is 75% water, it’s actually a very important factor to consider.

Exercise can be a wonderful way for students to deal with stress. There is nothing better than 
blowing off steam by running, playing footy or a good session with a punching bag!

Teach students how to articulate feelings and speak up for themselves.
For example, “I feel angry when you yell at me” or simply, “Please stop yelling.”
Compassionate communication is important to avoid a tendency to ‘stuff things down’ 
inside the body – which can result in blow-ups.

Negative self-talk can be a factor that affects young people.
Help your students to become aware of how they speak to themselves in their minds.
Are they kind to themselves? Are they patient and considerate of themselves
as they would be to a friend? Or are they hard on themselves and self-critical?
Once a person is aware of their own self-talk and how it is affecting them,
it can be transformed into more positive ways of thinking.
The field of Positive Psychology has wonderful tools for this.

Taking a break from stressful situations can also help. Engaging in activities like listening to music, talking to a friend, doing something creative like drawing or writing,
or even spending time with a pet can reduce stress.
These kinds of activities will also produce dopamine, important for well-being and learning.

Making connections with friends and building a network of supportive friends
who can help the student cope or just be there as a listening ear in times of trouble.
