Learn Faster with The Feynman Technique YouTube and 2 blogs

I'll get out of the way of that little canoe.

The genius Richard Feynman had great ability to understand any problem or topic so quickly
and precisely. Do not worry if you are too slow to understand technical terms.
If you follow Feynman’s techniques, your efficiency of understanding will be enhanced also.
Watch the video and implement in your study or research.
.................................................................................................................................................

Feynman Technique
The Technique
The Feynman Technique was developed by Richard Feynman, a Nobel Prize winning physicist.
It requires you to follow these steps:
1. Identify the topic you need to study. This should be a very clear topic.
If you’re studying history, for example, start with something very clear such as
“The Causes of the Cold War.”
If applicable, also look at guiding questions you may have been provided.
2. Read the information you have been provided. Again, it helps if you have a textbook,
reading or lecture notes that refer specifically to the topic you’re studying.
After you’ve read the chapter/section/notes, close the book. Highlight if you want.
3. Write down everything on a sheet of paper that you remember.
Write it down as if you were explaining it to a student who knew nothing about the topic-
i.e. no complicated words, explanations with everything you say etc.
4. If you can’t remember, turn back to the literature and read it.
Then close your book, and repeat. Repeat until you’ve finished the subject.
My Experience
Very, very useful for content heavy subjects. I used this method for my class
International Relations and Diplomacy, which focused on different IR theories
and the history of international relations. I found that understanding one topic led me easily
to understand the next topic and so on. In the end, I was left with a very coherent story,
of which I knew the details. I would not recommend this method for mathy subjects, though.
I think the technique is very much designed for something which has very clear subjects and topics.
I probably wouldn’t have found this technique useful in high school,
but at university every lecture has a very distinct topic and you might even be provided
with questions (like I was) which you can then answer while studying.
In addition, it is helpful if you have specific textbook (or other) readings which relate to the topic,
so you don’t have to spend time finding these. The technique also requires you to be very focused for a particular amount of time (e.g. how long it takes you to read a chapter),
so no lazy half on tumblr studying.
I do recommend using this technique in addition to doing exercises or answering essay questions.
The one problem with this technique is the preparation time.
As I mentioned, I recommend doing this technique as well as other study methods.
This is because I found that I could either start using this technique too early
(and not remember anything by the time I got to the exam)
or start too late (and not have enough time to finish everything in detail).
Rating
9/10. This is one of the best studying methods I have ever come across,
and I will most definitely be using this in the future.
Much love,
Lilly

How to Learn Anything Faster With The Feynman Technique
Floris Wolswijk

This post is part of a series that explains frameworks & theories in a concise and clear manner
“I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something
and knowing something.” - Richard Feynman
The Feynman Technique helps you to understand, recall and explain anything in under 20 minutes. Do you want to know how; use the framework below
Why
Because learning is not about remembering something difficult, but it is about making things easier. The Feynman technique can be used for anything,
from understanding a simple problem to grasping quantum physics.
By forcing yourself to make something easier, you will remember it better
Diagram

1) Choose a Concept
Everything from gravity or our solar system to business cards or bonsai trees goes.
The Feynman technique can be used to tackle most of the worlds concepts.
Even if a concept consists of multiple parts (e.g. how wars start),
you can use multiple paragraphs to explain it…

2) Explain it like I am 5
… like I am 5 years old. This forces you to make it really simple.
You cannot use words like ‘transpose’ or ‘novelle’, keep it simple.
One other way, most useful for explaining technology, is to put yourself in the shoes
of your (grand)parents. This has the advantage that you will not accidentally be patronizing
your public. Sidenote: I took the ELI5 acronym from the subreddit /r/explainlikeim5
a great place for explanations

3) Pinpoint Your Knowledge Gap
If you cannot find the words to describe your concept in layman terms,
get your nose back into the books. Making a simple explanation thus pushes you
towards really understanding and interpreting what you read, not just skimming the text.

4) Use an Analogy
Working with abstract concepts, or is your concept still just too difficult for the 5 year old you?
Try using an analogy to link the concept to something you already know.
This has the advantage of connecting old and new knowledge in your head
and helps you better remember the new concept.

5) Simplify the Concept
If in the end your concept is still too hard to grasp, try simplifying it once more.
Sometimes it is better to lose some details along the way if that makes it easier
for you to remember a concept (versus forgetting it altogether).

Examples
Gravity is the attraction of very large objects on smaller objects, like the earth on you and me
A novelle is short book that tells a story just from the perspective of the main character in the book
A bonsai tree is a miniature tree.
Just like your miniature car, it is made of the same things as the big thing, but only smaller

When to Use
Almost always. Use it to explain things to yourself when you are studying,
use it to explain difficult concepts to others (e.g. in this blog),
or of course when talking to your 5 year old niece/nephew.
“The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool.” – Richard Feynman

Take a book to bed with you. End of Success Level 1 YouTube

google images?
M'reen
Between Turbo Charged Reading all that information into your innermind,
if the material is longer than, say 10 pages or so, and it is not a novel
then it is better to have a twenty minute nap or to sleep on that information.
This is to allow your new and growing neurons to catalogue, cross reference that information
with all the other books you have read plus your experiences and finally to sift out the information
you have instructed your mind to find to satisfy your reasons for reading in that area.
For an email or newspaper article you won’t have the time to lie down, but the more information
you pour into your innermind then the more time it takes for your neurons to process.
My youngest daughter once put her exam work under her pillow
so that the information could seep into her mind by osmosis.
I guess this is not a bad idea as she had in fact instructed her mind to work on and retain
that information in order to pass her exam the following day.
In fact 'they' have proved this mind instruction to be so.
In her case she would have had to acquire a working knowledge of the information
and she was ensuring its recall.
When I took my hypnotherapy exam there was a foot note that said, ‘remember you are a hypnotherapist’. After pondering a little while I hypnotheraped myself
and I dreamt that my diploma, edged in green, was emerging from a photocopier.
This was the first time I’d used Mind Maps, they were pinned to my room wall
and I went through them each night until I was memory perfect.
However, I never got on that well with Sigmund Freud but I had programmed my mind to answer
the easy questions first and for my mind to come up with the answer I needed in the meantime.
Sure enough Mr Freud was mentioned and I didn’t have the faintest idea of the answer.
By the time I came to answering that question my pen just flowed over the page
as the answer poured out of its tip.  M'reen

The 30 Second Habit with a Lifelong Impact

The 30 Second Habit with a Lifelong Impact

What follows is a beautiful Essentialist practice in a gorgeous piece written by my friend Robyn Scott
(one of WIRED's 50 People About to Change the World). Enjoy.

There are no quick fixes. I know this as a social science junkie, who’s read endless books and blogs on the subject, and tried out much of the advice — mostly to no avail.
So I do not entitle this post lightly.
And I write it only having become convinced, after several months of experimentation,
that one of the simplest pieces of advice I’ve heard is also one of the best.
It is not from a best selling book — indeed no publisher would want it: even the most eloquent management thinker would struggle to spin a whole book around it. Nor is it born out
of our world of digital excess and discontent. Instead, it was given by a man born in the 19th century, to his teenage grandson, today in his fifth decade.

The man in question, an éminence grise of the business world, is one of the most interesting people
I have ever met. He has helped devise brands that are household names. These days, working only when he feels he has something to offer, he is parachuted in to solve stock price threatening corporate crises. Occasionally, when he’s sufficiently interested, he pens speeches for Fortune 500 CEOs and politicians, his words billed out at six figures. He is exceptionally well read, and also writes prolifically. Novels. But just for fun: on completion, he destroys them. He does not see the point
in being published, or of seeking publicity in general. Amongst his friends are some of the most powerful people on the planet — from business leaders, to politicians, actors and other luminaries
of the arts. But Google him, and you will find barely a ripple on the cyber seas.

I met him first over a coffee in his apartment, to discuss the strategy for a highly political non-profit working in Africa. Around his table sat an eclectic mix of very vocal people. Our host, making
the coffee, said almost nothing. But on the few occasions he did interject, with a brief question
or observation, it invariably clarified exactly what mattered— politely sweeping away the sludge
of opinion that clogs such discussions. It was masterful: like watching a conductor of the London Philharmonic coaxing a small town student orchestra into shape.
So when he shared some of the best advice he’d ever received, I was captivated.
If you only do one thing, do this

He was in his early teens, about to start senior school, when his grandfather took him aside
and told him the following:
Immediately after every lecture, meeting, or any significant experience, take 30 seconds — no more, no less — to write down the most important points. If you always do just this, said his grandfather,
and even if you only do this, with no other revision, you will be okay.
He did, and he was. In everything he has done since, with such accomplishment, and with enough room still to experience life so richly. He later inducted into the pact both his sons,
who have excelled in their young careers.

I’ve been trying it out for a few months. Here’s what I’ve found so far:

1. It’s not note taking: Don’t think, just because you write down everything in a meeting,
that you’re excused from the 30 second summation. Though brief, this exercise is entirely different from taking notes. It’s an act of interpretation, prioritisation and decision-making.

2. It’s hard work: Deciding what’s most important is exhausting. It’s amazing how easy it is to tell yourself you’ve captured everything that matters, to find excuses to avoid this brief mental sprint —
a kind of 100 metres for your brain.

3. Detail is a trap: Precisely because we so often, ostensibly, capture everything, we avoid the hard work of deciding what few things count. So much of excellence is, of course, the art of elimination. And the 30 second review stops you using quantity as an excuse.

4. You must act quickly: If you wait a few hours, you may recall the facts, but you lose the nuance.

5. And this makes all the difference in deciding what matters. Whether it’s the tone in someone’s voice, or the way one seemingly simple suggestion sparks so many others, or the shadow of an idea in your mind triggered by a passing comment.

6. You learn to listen better, and ask better questions: Once you get into the habit of the 30 second review, it starts to change the way you pay attention, whether listening to a talk or participating
in a discussion. It’s like learning to detect a simple melody amidst a cacophony of sound.
And as you listen with more focus, and ask better questions which prompt actionable answers,
so your 30 second review becomes more useful.

7. You’re able to help others more: Much of what makes the 30 second cut are observations about what matters to other people. Even if the purpose is to help better manage different interests in future conversations, it also helps you understand others’ needs, and so solve their problems. This does not surprise me: in months of interviewing people who make generous connections, I’ve been struck by how many have their own unconscious version of the 30 second review: focused on the question of how best they can help.

8. It gets easier and more valuable: Each time you practice, it gets a little easier, a little more helpful, and little more fun.

htttp://www.linkedin.com/today/post/article/20140401132614-8353952-the-30-second-habit-with-a-lifelong-impact?trk=tod-posts-post1-ptlt

I include this article because Turbo Charged Reading does not stand alone but is part of the skills
you use in life. The above article is excellent for many reasons and I‘d like to point out to TCRs:

1 It’s an act of interpretation, prioritisation and decision-making.

2 this brief mental sprint — a kind of 100 metres for your brain.

3 the art of elimination. ….. stops you using quantity as an excuse.

4 but you lose the nuance.

5 it’s the tone in someone’s voice,
or the shadow of an idea in your mind triggered by a passing comment.

6 you listen with more focus, and ask better questions which prompt actionable answers

7 focused on the question of how best they can help.

8 it gets a little easier, a little more helpful, and little more fun.

Each of these points is worth an article of their own from whatever your perspective.

Never finish a book? You read far too slowly?

Bryan the Snail, friend of M'reen

Never finish a book? You read far too slowly?
Written By M'reen

Bryan Harper is a pet snail who lives at the base of a sprig of rosemary in a plant pot.
He goes walk-about for days at a time and is never seen during his adventures.
However, he returns but after an extended period and when the worst was suspected,
he returned considerably larger.
As you can see he is not people or movement shy as are wild snails, he is confident.
Some people never read because they read so slowly or have a variety of reading or memory problems, CFS or maybe have had it drummed into them that they are ‘not readers’.
Unlike Bryan they do not move from the security of their plant pot and explore their reading possibilities. That is to move from what does not work well for them to reading,
not as they were taught, but as their mind is naturally programmed to read.
Turbo Charged Reading can be seen as one of Bryan’s journeys.
First is the desire to expand your horizons and explore the unknown, being open to the possibilities.
Having absorbed the paper or electronic written material directly into your Inner Mind bypassing
your eyes and conscious mind you then give it time to re-organise itself to suit your purpose
for reading and that is from a general overview to acing an exam.
After this you then bring increasing layers of the information back into your conscious mind
in a useable format, rather like Bryan returning so very much larger after having re-arranged
all he had ingested into a form that was beneficial to his progress.

10 TCR scenarios, can you find yourself?

Turbo Charge Read this month's new codes, laws and updates by isolating them from the pages of surrounding information that has not changed.

Make commuting time valuable as you research
your country, company or meting destination.

TCR all the books in your area and create a new recipe, beer or product for personal pleasure or business venture.

TCR all you can find the night before and be pleased with the spontaneous questions and answers available to you.

Do you really read that slowly?
Then stop reading each word
along each line on individual pages.
Take in  the whole 2 news-pages at once.

E-mails? Let the waffle bypass you as you zero in on the relevant information, letting you to get on with productive work.

TCRead in the areas of health, self development and growth enabling you to live those improvements with time to enjoy more.

Increase your vocabulary range and
comprehension gaining the confidence to use your ability naturally.

From reading comprehension, gain the success you want and need throughout your education and business life; leaving you with time for fun.

When TCR you engage with the book and laugh out loud, argue with the author and extend your thoughts.
Give you magnificent mind credit for its 7 +/- capability.

I can relate to most of these, Can you? M'reen

Mind Instructions.

Mind InstructionsWritten By M'reen

Once you’ve become familiar with the following procedures then in exactly the same way as you get into your car and drive away or do any other daily activities without thinking of their individual steps then you’ll follow all these detailed steps as easily as you currently slowly each word read a book or email.
Previously we’ve seen how to: (1st leaf)  Choose your Area of Reading and how to (2nd leaf) Choose an Appropriate Book followed by how to(3rd leaf) Prepare the Spine of the Book (and 4th leaf) How to Turn its Pages on the first branch of the first Mind Tree.
Written like that it sounds such an imposing set of instructions; but having experienced this you realise that it’s just natural common sense approach and that we very rarely write out the obvious.
However it is in the practice of the detail that separates the professional from the gifted amateur.
This brings us almost to the end of the first of the three branches of the Set Up Mind Tree
with the other two branches being Prepare your physical area and Prepare your body.

We are now looking at the 5th to 7th leaves on the Books branch of your Mind tree
and really these will take less than two minutes of your time.
These leaves are: (5th leaf) Write your purpose, create your (6th leaf) Mind Instructions
and your (7th leaf) Closing Mind Order
I discussed the essential value of Purpose in all areas of life in the course.
With these reasons is in mind you write down your purpose for reading this material
After this you give your mind instructions as to what it is to do while you are taking the written word directly from the page or electronic devise into your innermind by bypassing your eyes
and conscious awareness when turning the pages of your book as previously described.
You then give your innermind its Closing Orders so that it knows what to do with
this new material in order to satisfy your stated purpose.

As you are at the learning stage of Turbo Charged Reading your first level purpose is to:
Purpose: Learn the different stages of TCR
and to name and order the ten Royal Houses of England and the UK
with Oliver Cromwell and Lady Jane Grey.
Do you actually believe that you can do this?
If not then this point needs working on in ways that are suitable to you
and this is the principal advantage of Turbo Charged Reading
as without your acceptable life belief then you are just reading quickly and learning slowly if at all.
When you have established this initial purpose you say it out loud
as this forms a firm contact with yourself

Mind Instructions when turning your pages or accessing the next screen.
You are probably aware that your mind can deal with 7 +/- 2 bits of information simultaneously
so even though you are in the focussed learning state when you are turning the pages of your book
your mind can and will think of quite disparate things.
The purpose written above is almost an essay in itself and when you are turning the pages of your book it is helpful to keep your mind on target as to its purpose and also it helps to keep the rest
of your magnificent multitasking mind from wandering too far.
When turning the pages I repeat a shortened version of my purpose.
Repeating it out loud as opposed to silently engages more of my mind.
Therefore I’d give my mind the repeated instructions of: Re-mem-ber 10 + 2. UK rules
If you can generate a rhythm it is helpful when turning the pages as this really isn’t a race.

After Turbo Charged Reading the material by completing all the preparations steps
and actively turning the pages so allowing all that information directly into your innermind.
The next stage in is to skim through the material or pre-chosen section of your book
to find specific targeted questions for your innermind to find the answers that satisfy
your stated purpose at this stage.
Note; I am not expecting to remember 40 rulers, Oliver Cromwell and Lady Jane Grey in order
or their dates or any other information at this stage / level of my journey through this information.

Prior to becoming a Turbo Charged Reader learning such a list would be excessively difficult
in fact I can’t remember ever having done so as I used to vie with Maxine to be bottom
with our weekly Latin spelling list though I shall, eventually, share ways of learning how to spell.

You innermind is naturally programmed to find answers from our earliest days as man.
As there are ten Royal Houses I think I’ll instruct my innermind to remember the code:
Naply and Tshsw and which Houses those letters represent.
My gosh, even though I’m a Brit I’ve never heard the name of some of those houses before
and those codes break the whole thing down to a ‘doable’ memory,
an enjoyable task as opposed to a frightening none possibility.

Now I get out of the way and give my developing neurons time
to form the necessary pathways to my successful recall and memory of this first layer of facts.
After which I may go in for a second layer of information until I have the level of detail I want
from this material from repeating the list as my party piece to Master Mind level of detail.

Time is more Valuable than Money

The idea of ‘Time is more valuable than money’ is taken from the business section.
Written By M'reen

This is not always the case when reading as to read any sort of book in ‘slow’ or ‘fast’ mode
may be appropriate for you at this time but not for a that time or that situation.
Even reading material that you know you will forget (that is ‘slow’ read if you are a ‘forget’ person)
is a choice that I‘m sometimes happy to make.

However, when you think of the £/$ amount of books you have read and forgotten,
when you think of the number of trees on your bookshelves that cannot be used in a conversation, cannot be used to further your thought evolution or cannot actively be used
in your daily professional life then Time Definitely Is Money and all that Infers.

The upfront cost of Turbo Charged Reading is, in fact, very small,
the time spent learning how to Turbo Charge Read is, again, very short.
However the time to deal with the gremlins of habit and procrastination etc. while being short
and an effortless part of the Turbo Charged Reading programme; is a different situation.
This is often a case of the ‘you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink’ syndrome.

The carrot, the potential, the evidence of others, the evidence of your own experience
of the value and potential of Turbo Charged Reading can rather be like the gym equipment
that lies unopened or unused even though you agree its use is of benefit or even essential for you.

In order to circumvent these natural human states
different forms of gremlin busting form part of the programme
and all stages of the programme are carefully and professionally designed for natural success.
The second programme level includes email, telephone or a skype type feedback session
after each level.
Then there is belonging to the community of successful Turbo Charged Readers
and offering your success story that will encourage the student of any age
and level and subject area and also the parent or teacher encouraging that learning.
In fact sometimes it is the Turbo Charged Reading child who encourages the parent or grandparent.

Stress that upsets me and what I can offer.

He is called Cuddles and I have some amusing stories
as to how he helps when I have my therapist hat on. M'reen

A sentence taken from 'Michelle Rhee still doesn’t get it'.
“Some kindergarten students now don’t have time for recess because they are learning reading
and math — that gives short shrift to subjects including science, history and the arts”.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2014/04/06/michelle-rhee-still-doesnt-get-it/
An attitude that has disturbed me for decades and it would take me pages to describe to you why;
based on my teacher training of the 1970s and the Nursery School I created in the 1980s etc.

What has this to do with Turbo Charged Reading you might legitimately ask? Written by M'reen
A lot, as Turbo Charged Reading can offer freedom, an escape.

I recently met a professional person who is charged out in 6 minute blocks.
Those 6 minute blocks include going-to-the-toilet-time!
He was so anxious regarding a failed appointment that he had no influence over
that he was present with nothing but the consequences when he returned to his cage.

For the child who has learned to read and can read with comprehension.

Anything that is written down on papers or electronic media can be Turbo Charged Read
this means facts, figures, diagrams, formulae, language spelling lists, actually everything.
a) The year’s work can be Turbo Charged Read a few times at the beginning of the year
b) and re-TCR each term as review and preview or c) sections can be TCR before each lesson.

B} You might ask, ‘if after TCR the material is firmly in my innermind and I’ve the mind maps
for swotting purposes why should I re-TCR all the material for reviewing purposes’?
I would answer that you are perfectly correct from the point of view of a reading, retaining
and recalling point of view. However I have learned as a Counselling student and have experienced
as a reading tutor of a nine year old that to ‘know’ that you ‘know’ gives an immense confidence boost and validation to the work previously undertaken.
A,C} When TCR a course’s written work in advance then that information is in your innermind
and your little neurons have created new pathways establishing that information
sections of which is re-visited before each lesson and built upon within each lesson
not as strange incomprehensible material but as a building up of understanding.
For example, you cannot understand the diagrams and formulae etc from simply TCR them
but when they come to be  taught, then their form is not unfamiliar as the building blocks
are there and just need to become familiar in you innermind with the tutorial.

What does this all mean to a child who is being processed in nursery school
or is being regimented in ‘big’ school?

I would argue that being able to TCR enables the Freedom To Be A Child.
Get the school work done; get the extracurricular activities done; activities that may be
of interest only to the child because no-one knows the child’s inner heart
and the child ‘enjoys’ what is expected and valued.
After which the child will have time to enjoy what is naturally enjoyed, have time to dream
with clouds – an often undervalued occupation. Also the parents and teachers will have a more successful relationship with the child, their own aspirations and any obligations they feel.

For the adult who is stuck in an occupation that is not of benefit to them as a person
a change of direction, a new career an unexpected opportunity or responsibility.
My gosh is there enough time to add: a hobby, interest and all those areas that enable one
to become a more satisfied and complete person?
TCR a new career while maintaining your old one and supporting your lifestyle.
TCR your subject area for your interview or newly appointed responsibilities.
TCR the legal changes in your profession or the monthly updates for your products.
TCR your subject area in order to give an expert presentation or invent a new recipe
described as tasty or successful or envision a new play > sport or thespian .
TCR just for the fun of it.
