Make Reading to Young Children Fun

Did you know that according to the US Department of Education, children who are read to

at least three times a week by a family member are almost twice as likely to score in the top 25% 

in reading as children who are read to less than 3 times a week?

This program is about reading to young children

and some ideas I have found to make it more fun and interesting for you and your kids.

At What Age Should Reading Start?

It is never too early to start reading to your children. Even before they are old enough

to understand the story, babies are already benefiting from listening and interacting with you.

As children grow, you can encourage them to participate by asking questions,

and pointing out connections between letters, words, and pictures.

Avoid Reading Repetition

Though we have many books in our home, my kids have the (sometimes annoying) habit

of wanting the same books read to them over and over again. I guess they find comfort

in the repetition. I try to make it less monotonous by asking them to complete a sentence

or explain to me what is going on in the story.

Make Reading More Interactive

As you read to your kids, from time to time remember to point out the words on the page

as you read them. This will help your child make the connection that the letters have meaning.

Extend the Impact of Reading

You can incorporate books into the rest of your day by retelling the stories you have read

at the dinner table or as you drive in the car. Encourage your child to tell you how a story ends.

Choose Relevant Books

We have dogs as pets in our home and our kids love books about dogs.

Sometimes I will substitute our pets' names for dogs in a story. Connecting what kids

already know to what they hear or read helps your children understand more about their world.

Do not forget to do some reading for your own enjoyment.

And let the kids see you sitting down with a good book. Setting that good example

will lay the groundwork for your children to become life-long readers.
